advent of the internet. While the internet has the power to provide mind boggling amounts of information and knowledge the use and abuse of this knowledge has also grown. With this in mind, many organizations have attempted to create a code of ethics in regard to their online operations, and yet, because of the global regulatory environment, these codes of ethics are continuously changing which results in no one company being in total compliance. The impact on e-commerce and marketing has been bothersome. Is there a solution, a one stop guideline or outline for businesses in creating their own e-commerce code of ethics? A companys code of ethics basically outlines who the company is, what they believe in and what their goals are. They outline the steps that they intend to take to meet these goals in a way that is fair to all involved. However, this is where the gray area enters in. What is fair? What is fair usage? At what point are copyright laws breached? These questions have been considered by many global organizations, the World Intellectual Property Organization, in particular. In the ideal situation the sharing of knowledge and creative works would be used ethically by those utilizing the web(WIPO, 1999). However, this is not a perfect world and as such, laws were determined to be needed to protect the rights of the designers and creators of such works. But, this is where the problems have begun to multiply as it applies to global e-commerce. Not all the countries, especially those in third world countries, accept the copyright laws, the IP rules, among others.
