The past three years have seen the Internet gateway company buying enough other Internet businesses - shopping, entertainment, website-hosting, broadcast news, merchant software - to recreate itself as much more than any search engine or Internet "community." Clearly, Yahoos top executives are determined to make Yahoo a multi media, multi-opportunity entity. Most recently (March, 1999) Yahoo bought still another upstart Internet company, L.A. Techs GeoCities, in a $4.6 billion stock deal. Such a move serves to illustrate in bold, unmistakable terms, the wide chasm that exists between the valuation of "companies making real things and Internet high-fliers that produce dreams" (Money 40). This months U.S. News & World Report (04/12/99) points out that Yahoos "feeding frenzy" does not "rule out other major acquisitions in the near future. That means more consolidation for the Internet industry--and even higher stock prices for the companies doing the deals" (Greenberg 40). On the other hand, one of the most established entities in the world, throughout history, is the precious metal silver. In the 1970s, precious metals were a popular rage in investment circles, nearly thirty years later it is impossible to make a strong case for silver on supply and demand fundamentals. Precious metals are not necessarily a good inflation hedge or long-term, meaningful investment to begin with. Unlike real estate or stock in asset-rich companies, they are a sterile asset. They pay neither interest nor dividends. It costs 0.5% a year in insurance and storage just to hang on to them.
