living creature, and man in the world of other men. Two of their most potent works are "Civilization and its Discontents" (Freud), and "The Undiscovered Self" (Jung). In the following paper we examine these two works separately and then provide a comparison of the two. Freud Like many of the works of Freud, in this particular work he details aspects about man that are often somewhat disturbing and perhaps unbelievable. One thing that does make a great deal of sense is that which argues that the natural state of man, by himself, is often at odds with man in society. Man, as an individual, seeks freedom from the demands of society, and inherently wants to be the boss of his own world. He indicates that society does not work for all men, and that mankind is naturally aggressive and constantly seeking self satisfaction and power. Because of this dueling reality man is often confused, and filled with various forms of neuroses. Freud distinguishes aspects of the individual, providing us with the id, and the ego. The unconscious part of ones mind is the id, and this is the part of an individual that drives their actions and their behavior. The ego is that part of the individual known as the self. This part of the individual is the one that consciously deals with the external world. The function of the ego is to provide the id with as much pleasure as possible. Freud also argued that the desires of man, those inherently powerful needs, are actually those that demand sex and violence.
