Now, more than ever, this program, and others like it, that utilize the talents of senior citizens should be promoted and expanded. As the Baby Boomer generation quickly approaches retirement age and senior citizen status, there has been a corresponding increase in the life expectancy, which suggests that the US will soon find itself in the midst of a demographic revolution (Freedman, 1997). The senior population is already twice what it was in 1960 and is expected to double again with the next thirty years. By the middle of the twenty-first century seniors will out-number children and youth for the first time in the nations history (Freedman, 1997). For the most part, this demographic shift has been portrayed in a negative manner. It has been presented as constituting a strain on both families and social services. However, it is also true that this generation of seniors will be the largest, best-educated and most active generation of older adults in history. Rather than a drain on the country, the retirement and senior years of these upcoming senior citizens may prove to be a boon to the nation, rather, than a detriment, particularly if their talents are utilized through the facility of national service volunteerism.
