have included the geographical position of the country and the demography. Overall, the foreign policy of Indonesia may be seen as being independent, as Mohammad Hatta, stated in 1948 when
he was the Vice President, this does not mean "being "neutral" or taking "equidistant" positions on international issues, nor is it a policy of "neglecting" or "ignoring" developments in world
affairs." (quoted in Anonymous, 2006). To place this into context we need to look at the brief background to the country and then consider the foreign policy objectives, the
instruments of foreign policy and the foreign policy resources which come together to create the international strategy. The area is a remarkable region, it is the worlds largest archipelago made
up of a total of 17,000 islands of mixed sizes and shapes, of these only 6,000 are inhabited (CIA, 2001). To put this into context the total size of
the archipelago us not quite the three times the size of Texas (CIA, 2001). The colonisation of the Indonesia may be seen
as starting with the establishment of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1602, and as the area was also populated by pirates there was an accompaniment of Dutch warships
with the companys ship that travelled to the area in order to acquire spices for trading in the west (Gordon, 2000). Independence was actually gained in 1945. Sukarno was the
first president in 1945, but the Dutch did not recognise him and the fighting to gain their independence and establish a democracy continued for another four years, until in 1949
