This paper considers Agamemnon in The Iliad, Kreon in The Antigone, Dido in The Aeneid and Phaedra in the Hippolytus; and discusses why the men are flawed leaders, and the differences and similarities between the women. Discussion We turn first to The Iliad, Homers great epic poem about the siege of Troy. We might as well take Agamemnon as he comes; hes in the very first book, and he displays extremely poor leadership the first time we see him. He has a captive, Chryseis, the daughter of Chryses, a priest of Apollo (Homer). The priest begs Agamemnon to return his daughter, but the latter says "The girl-I wont give up the girl. Long before that, / old age will overtake her in my house" (I.32-33). Agamemnon might be forgiven for keeping the girl, with whom he is totally infatuated, and defying her father. But he shows very poor judgment when eh subsequently defies Apollo himself. The god makes it clear that he is displeased by Agamemnons stubbornness, but even when Agamemnon is informed that he is fighting a god, he continues to insist that he will keep the girl (Homer). In so doing, he is acting not like a leader, but like a spoiled brat. Agamemnon is also a married man, and although his relationship with his wife Clytemnestra is deadly, he has no business bringing home the girl as his mistress. His petulance sets a poor example. Kreon (or Creon as its often spelled) is the King of Thebes. In order to explain why he is flawed, we need to look at the very last scene of the play, for this is where he faces his losses.
