According to Tufano (1998), an organization or an individual can anticipate how different circumstances affect the cross-sectional and time-series distribution of realized exposures through construction of value models of a particular firm. Through measuring the variables and comparing them to the observed levels of exposures, it is possible to analyze the level or veracity of information presented in terms of gaining a greater understanding of how actual exposures are set. In an earlier publication, Tufano (1996) comments that, in general, capital markets take firm-specific and market-specific factors into account whenever and wherever they are determining exposures of firms and, if given additional information, such as the level of hedging activities, incorporate it into their valuation of the firms. Financial engineering plays a meaningful role in changing the risk exposures of companies and the stock market reflects this fundamental fact. Strategic Options and Opportunities Jackson (1997) has referred to financial engineering as one type of corporate restructuring, and believes it to be, fundamentally, the most effective.
