Fielding the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAP) Research Compiled by 10/2010 Please Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs) have many advantages over uparmored High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs). They provide about twice the amount of protection from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) as do the other vehicles and, given that IEDs have been responsible for up to 75% of US casualties in this war, obviously justify whatever added cost these vehicles represent (Government Accountability Office, 2008). Not surprisingly, the demands for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs) in Iraq have been constantly intensifying. These demands first began to be heard in 1996 when a few marines began requesting these vehicles (Gayle, 2008). That number rapidly increased over time. Because of the obvious superiority of these vehicles to those already in the field, the Marine Corps planned soon after their introduction to replace all of existing uparmored High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs). After initially dragging its heels, the Army decided to do likewise. All in all, the decision by the Marines and the Army to replace HMMWVs with MRAPs resulted in a need for 23,000 vehicles (Fleickert, 2007). Ultimately, the JROC capped the requests at 15,374 vehicles (Fleickert, 2007).
