Family therapy can take a number of different forms. Three therapeutic approaches that are of particular interest are the structural approach, the systemic approach, and
the solution-focused approach. The purpose of this paper is to outline each of these approaches and to evaluate their effectiveness in counseling a specific family. This family will
be the fictional Suarez family. Case Study
The Suarez family consists of a single mother and four children, three boys and one girls. The mother is twenty-four years of age and the children range in
age from nine to nine months. The family has been in the assessment/intervention program for two years. They have suffered from domestic violence as well as a dire
need for life style intervention. The family remains destitute and trapped in a sporadically violent environment. They are in need even of such basic items as food and
clothing and there is no apparent solution to the dilemma to either the client or to the familys case counselor. Ms. Suarez and
her children vary their residence between the home of her mother and the abusive father of the children. During the assessment phase it is revealed that both Ms. Suarezs
mother and the paternal grandmother of the children are in bad health and also share in a shaky economic status. The grandmothers with whom Ms. Suarez and her children
share residences on a part time basis provide no guidelines or examples for Ms. Suarez, nor do they provide any measure of security for the children. The father of
