which cultural and national barriers have been eroded to a large extent by the communicative power of technology. These advances still continue. Among all the technological advancements that are promised for the future, perhaps the most compelling of them all is nanotechnology. The ability to purposefully manipulate objects at the molecular level holds nearly limitless potential for the human race, and may have dramatic implications for worldwide issues such as poverty, disease, inequality of resources, and more. However, just as with any emerging technology with world-changing potential, nanotechnology has both its proponents and its critics. This paper will explore both the positive and negative aspects of nanotechnology, at the economic, ethical, and environmental levels. This paragraph helps the student provide a basic overview of what nanotechnology actually is. To understand the powerful potential and importance of nanotechnology, it is necessary first of course to understand just what nanotechnology is and how it works. Simply put, nanotechnology refers to the creation of microscopic "robots" that function not by mechanical or electrical mechanics, but through protein coding; these nano-bots have the capacity to manipulate and re-arrange atoms in a structured and predictable fashion. Scientists can encode specific instructions at the protein level in these nanobots in order to achieve a wide variety of effects. For instance, a nano-bot might be instructed to rearrange the atoms in a lump of carbon so as to transmute the molecular structure of the carbon to that of diamond. Clearly, this has immense potential for impacting many areas of human life. To begin with, there are many powerful medical applications for nanotechnology. Rather than engaging in invasive surgical procedures, surgeons could simply use nano-bots to carry out operations without major debilitating incisions; moreover, the precision of operating at the atomic level means that nano-bots could be ...
