Rape is not necessarily a sexual act. It is not men simply being turned on by women in jeans and not being able to hold back. Tight jeans in Italy, as some remember, might free one from prosecution. In 1999, Italys court of appeals overturned a rape conviction because, as the court told it: "It is common knowledge... that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the effective help of the person wearing them... and it is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might " ("Women," 1999,p.19). One would think that the statement might have been made decades ago, but in this day and age, many myths about rape continue to exist. What are the myths of rape and what is the reality? One myth is that the rapist is acting due to an uncontrollable sex drive but the fact is that men can control their sexual urges (Matshe, 1997). This has to be true. If it were not, then all men would rape and that is far from the case. Another myth is that a rapist by description is often a sex-starved, crazy or drunken, disgusting man who surprises women in the night (1997). The truth is that many victims know the aggressor before the incident occurs, and rapes often happen in ones own home, and further, rapists do not always carry weapons (1997).
