All of these elements are helpful in developing the necessary skills for written expression. Writing classes should always provide students with "the basics" in terms of technical skills, including, but not limited to: support for basic language use, grammar, spelling, the development of different essay structures and the purpose of internal elements, including topic sentences and thesis sentences. Because students come to writing classes with a variety of skill levels, some of these basic elements must be included in any basic writing class. At the same time, this should not be the total focus of the class or the complete theme of "lessons" presented. Students should come away from a writing class with a better understanding of how to clearly present an essay that is either based on a research concept or presents a distinct argument. An understanding of how to apply a topic to the basic essay structure is also an important factor that must be reflected in the lessons of a writing class. The basic structure of introduction, body and conclusion (tell them what you will tell them, tell them, and tell them what you told them) is essential to lessons on writing, and students must be reminded of how to integrate this structure into their own arguments. Too often, it is easy to forget what the purpose of a particular essay is.
