W.E.B. Du Bois has attracted both criticism and kudos from the academic delete practically since the day he wrote his first
word. In most cases, Du Bois work gave hope to the hopeless, and inspiration to the uninspired. He gave the black American a point of focus and a
point around to rally. It held lasting meaning for many. Cornel West is one of those whom Du Bois inspired. Rightly so since it was Du Bois
who was the first black to graduate from Harvard with a Ph.D. and West, a member of Harvards faculty, is now one of the most influential leaders in the world
in terms of black studies (Sundquist PG). West is a social philosopher whose "The Future of Race" was intended to tell
the story of two "grandchildren" of Du Bois "Talented Tenth", a belief first articulated by Du Bois that:
"The Negro race, like all other races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men" (Sundquist PG).
Indeed Du Bois has inspired many members of the "Talented Tenths". William H. Ferris writes in 1913:
