scoring rubric that offers a range of subjective possibilities, such as "high, middle and low quality levels for each feature" on the rubric (Gregg, et al, 2007, p. 306). The rubric for scoring compositions will vary with the academic level of the students involved. For example, at the lower elementary level, evaluators focus on the such elements as proper sentence construction, spelling, vocabulary choice, and use of punctuation. While these features are still noted at higher levels, and still count off in terms of evaluation when errors are made, older students are expected to write fluently and cohesively, maintaining the proper structure for an expository essay, but also exhibiting the ability to think creatively. Older student are expected to present an original thesis and then substantiate their ideas with references to course material or other sources, citing these sources appropriately and, thereby, avoiding the charge of plagiarism. While technology has made it easier for students to access sources, it has also made it easier for them to plagiarize. It is quite simple for students to find digitally-recorded information on any topic, highlight it, copy it and paste it electronically word-for-word into their own papers and turn them in as their own work (Sterngold, 2004). A 2003 survey revealed that 87 percent of college students indicated that they knew of peers who plagiarized from the Internet at least once (Sterngold, 2004). One of the reasons why plagiarism has become epidemic is that many students lack the skills, in reference to writing and critical thinking, to address assignments successfully (Sterngold, 2004). There are many students who "cannot write in a clear and logical manner, support their ideas with evidence and arguments, or edit their own papers" (Sterngold, 2004, p. 16).
