remained highly influential and constitutes foundational knowledge for the current understanding of Christian church history in its first three centuries (Ferguson). Eusebius text provides eyewitness accounts of events that occurred during his own era, such as the persecutions that occurred under Emperor Diocletian, the conversion of Constantine and the Council of Nicea. For example, in Church History, Book 8, chapter 2.1, he writes: We saw with our own eyes the houses of prayer thrown down to the very foundations, and the divine and sacred Scriptures committed to the flames in the market-places, and the shepherds of the churches basely hidden here and there, and some of them captured ignominiously, and mocked by their enemies (Ferguson). However, it is also clear that Eusebius was highly influenced by the prevailing politically correct attitudes of his time, as he describes Jews as "a people who had slain the prophets and the Lord himself" (Ferguson). Therefore, it is debatable as to the degree to which Eusebius history can be regarded as reliable. In the opening chapter, Eusebius explicitly states his principal focus, which describes the six forms of explanation and description that he will offer. He writes: 1. It is my purpose to write an account of the successions of the holy apostles; ... 2. to relate the many important events that are said to have occurred in the history of the church; 3.
