his experiences. He may find that others have gone through something similar, and together they can find ways of dealing with the stresses of such experiences. In this case, the
student is facing the challenge of not being able to complete the educational program he desires. In describing his situation, the student might do something like the following. Im a
19-year old South African male and I came to the United States on a golf scholarship. I was excited by the opportunity, by coming to a new country and by
the chance to play golf, which I love. Unfortunately, the NCAA would not give me clearance to play, and I found myself having to reevaluate my plans. Although golf is
my first love, art is also of great importance to me, and so I have turned to that field and chosen to pursue it while I am here. That is,
rather than being in America on a sports-related program, I have had to learn to appreciate America from the perspective of a normal academic program. As I have begun working
more intensely on my art, I have found Im doing very well in it, and Im also doing a great deal of painting, an activity I enjoy but which I
would not have undertaken to this extent if I were busy playing golf. In this regard, not playing golf has actually been a positive experience, as it has led me
