What most theorists recognize is that love exists on a number of different levels, but many confuse the sex act as an act of love. Though Fromm and others have viewed sex as a means of creating a love union, there is also the argument that individuals readily perform sexual acts in the absence of any kind of love. Understanding the implications of this in terms of creating a workable sexual ethic in the modern culture is a significant challenge addressed by authors like Erich Fromm, Sharon Olds, Betrand Russell, Raymond Carver, Tillie Olsen, Richard Mohr, June Jordan and Barbara Ehrenreich. Erotic Love and Rational Choice Fromm recognized that love comes in a number of forms, including brotherly love, motherly love and erotic love. Fromm describes erotic love as: "a craving for complete fusion, for union with one other person. It is by its very nature exclusive and not universal; it is also perhaps the most deceptive form of love there is" (160). "sexual desire can be stimulated by the anxiety of aloneness, but the wish to conquer or be conquered, by vanity, by the wish to hurt or even to destroy, as much as it can stimulated by love" (Fromm 160). Fromm contends, then, that individuals mistake sexual love for other more lasting forms of love, like brotherly love or motherly love, because people are drawn into the union, into the sexual act which brings people close physically. Without tenderness, without brotherly love, the sexual act is transitory and moves individuals towards estrangement (Fromm 161). ...
