to teachers and/or employers. They adapt the content and vocabulary of their language to fit the circumstance, selecting the best words to convey the message and connotation that they wish to convey. For example, a student wants to convey--both in writing and in oral speech--that he or she has a mastery of what is termed formal or standard English. Educated, that is "standard," English is a "norm for all speakers of English" because it serves to ensure "effective communication" (Reising 228). Rules of grammar and diction serve to minimize the risk of misunderstanding and decrease ambiguity (Reising 228). A student who uses African American dialect, such as saying, "He sick today," or does not use the plural forms of nouns, will fail to impress either a teacher or an employer. It has been the experience of this writer/tutor that each profession, each workplace, has its own distinct vocabulary, which uses even standard words in their own individual ways. In addressing how language use changes when speaking to employers, the student researching this topic should think about words that are unique to whatever jobs you may have held. For example, this writer/tutor once had job that included typing autopsy reports. If the examiner had nothing to say about a particular bodily system or organ, the phrase "grossly unremarkable" was used, which means that overall there was not anything particularly dysfunctional or unusual about this part of the body. However, it is not a phrase that one comes across in everyday use. In social situations, the use of overly standard, formal English among friends may make it seem like the individual is being stand-offish or ostentatious. Imagine meeting a friend on the street and saying, "I am so pleased to have the opportunity to greet you today." ...
