The Attack on America that occurred on September 11, 2001 has had tremendous effects on lives, health, trade, and the economy. New York Citys businesses are reporting extremely low sales and revenue. For instance, Maiden Lane is the street that dead-ends at Ground Zero. This is one of the streets that has been closed since the attack. Peter Muscat owns a liquor shop on that street and has had no sales since September 10. According to repots, there are about 14,000 businesses in lower Manhattan that are in the same situation. All 14,000 are at risk of closing the doors forever (Schlosser and Chen, 2001). The unemployment rates in New York have soared since the attack. They were high at 5.8 percent prior to the attack but since then, they have steadily grown dramatically. More than 100,000 people have already or will lose their jobs in New York City alone (Schlosser and Chen, 2001). Unemployment across the country has soared. The government reported that jobless claims jumped to 450,000 during the third week of September; that was just barely two weeks after the attack. It was the highest jump in unemployment claims in nine years (Birnbaum et al, 2001). The hotel industry across the country has already laid off 3,500 employees. Wall street has lost $160 million in just trading commissions since September 11 (Business Week, 2001). The stock market was closed for a week.
