While this field should be booming, existing as it does at the very epicenter of the digital revolution, things arent quite working out that way. IT companies throughout the country are grossly understaffed due to ingrained trouble retaining talent, and the compounding effects of this understaffing are causing even more employees to desert what should be promising careers. At the core of this problem is a mistaken conception of the mentoring process and what it is supposed to achieve. This paper will present a particular case study and then identify the problem indicated in that study, analyze the causal factors of the problem, and ultimately offer solutions for the expedient remedy of the problem. In this paragraph, the student is shown how to offer a succinct summary of the case study. The case study in question is this: Pamela applied for a job at a prestigious IT firm after being encouraged to levy her love for programming into a career opportunity. Pamela held advanced degrees in IT, and, recognizing her natural talent and passion for the work, her supervisors placed her in a mentoring program for high potential employees, with a view towards promoting her into a managerial position after a short time. Superficially, Pamelas talent was recognized; her superiors regarded her as one of the best three out of her team of twenty.
