The investigator used two instruments to survey Online faculty: Bolman and Deals Leadership Orientations (Other) and the Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Survey. Bolman and Deal identified four leadership frames: structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. The structural frame emphasizes formal relationships; the political frame emphasizes power and influence; the human reference frame emphasizes relationships; and the symbolic frame emphasizes the socio-cultural perspective (Jewell, 2007). Faculty who participated in the study were not only Online instructors they were distant instructors. This means they were geographically separated from the campus. Surveys were provided at a secure Online site, thus, surveys were completed on the Web (Jewell, 2007). Some Online faculty members worked for more than on higher education institution. They completed the surveys considering only the institution for which they worked most frequently. Jewells (2007) purpose for the study was to determine which frame of reference was used most often and if one of these frames or a combination of two or more frames was more effective in terms of Online faculty job satisfaction. Leading a group of faculty members who are geographically separated and who work primarily Online is vastly different than leading a group of faculty located on the same campus. Jewell (2007) hypothesized there would be a difference in the intrinsic, extrinsic, and overall job satisfaction related to different leadership frames. She also hypothesized there would be a difference in job satisfaction when deans used a single frame, dual frames, or multiple leadership frames.
