In a fashion indicative of such, stories such as The Tell-Tale Heart successfully combined the elements of an anecdotal psychological thriller with seeds to create some of the most influential literary criticism of Poes time. (Carlson 62). Before reading The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, I mistakenly anticipated that it would be just another story of poetic affection and love either newly found or very long lost. Ironically, much to my surprise and to my curious intrigue, it was a markedly brief tale of graphic madness, inhuman obsession, and empathetic conscious. Its seemingly innocent yet genuinely corrupt title made true sense and blossomed its demented logic only as I read the poems very last line. Such was indicative of the validity of a remark made by Edward Davidson which suggests that Poes writing displayed affection for the co-existence of suspense and intrigue. (Davidson 112). Indeed, it was seemingly impossible to "put down" the Tell-Tale Heart until my curiosity was satisfied at the storys extreme conclusion. Typical of much of Poes work, Tell-Tale Heart is essentially the narrative of a madman. () Graphically describing his emotionally-involved need to kill, the speaker insists on frequently and rather adamantly reminding us that he is not mad. As the story reads on, I found myself searching for a motive, looking for a clue and finding that the psychotic individual relaying the story truly had neither.
