They develop from being a totally helpless little bundle that doesnt have the motor ability to control his or her own head to become a child at the age of five who can communicate, run, jump and perform relatively complex motor skills. However, the work of educational innovators, such as Maria Montessori, and child psychologists, such as Jean Piaget, have shown conclusively that a young childs mind operates in ways that are inherently different from those of an adult. Piagets research divides the cognitive stages of development for children into four distinct stages?sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete-operational, and formal-operational periods (Holme, 1972, p. 85). While each stage is qualitatively different from the other, the order of the stages is invariant?"the child must complete the sensorimotor period before he can reach the pre-operational stage", etc. (p. 85). When Piaget would give lectures to American audiences, he was invariably asked what motivated a child to move from one stage to the next and how could it be speeded up? Piaget felt that efforts to accelerate cognitive development were unwise, at best, and possibly harmful (Holme, 1972, p. 87). Children go through each stage in order to have foundation to build upon for the next. Parents who wouldnt dream of expecting a child to run, even before the babys learned how to crawl, try to teach their toddlers mathematics. Of course, part of this behavior on the part of parents is due to the some of the latest research relative to cognitive development that stresses the importance of a stimulating environment in early childhood.
