the European nations were destitute, with little to hope for or to work for. Yet some sixty years after the end of World War II, Europe is a strong country with its nations unified in a scenario known as the European Union. The EUs currency, the Euro, is jockeying the U.S. dollar for position a number one currency in the world. The question we ask ourselves is, what happened between then and now? How did the destitute Europe of 1945 become the strong and prosperous EU of the 21st century? The real start toward the European comeback came via two events - the first was the meeting between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1947, as the two still-standing nations decided to divvy up Germany between them (East Germany was the communist side, whereas West Germany would look to the United States and have a democratic government). The same situation happened with Germans capital, Berlin. While East Berlin became the domain of the Soviet Union, West Berlin (like West Germany) looked to the United States. During the 1950s, the "wall" was more a barrier; it wasnt until too many people were sneaking over the "barrier" to West Berlin (and perceived freedom) that the official Berlin Wall was built, and East Germans shot for trying to take the route west. In Germany, at least, the post-war years well into the 1970s and 1980s continued to be chaotic as the former one nation now had dual ties, with the United States and the Soviet Union continuing to eye each other uneasily over the abyss. The second event was the Marshall Plan, an aid plan put into place by the United States to help Europe rebuild.
