To help do this, researchers are give a variety of tools to use; one of which is the descriptive study. The descriptive study is generally the first "scientific toe in the water" when it comes to various areas of inquiry (Grimes and Schulz, 2002; p. 145). Among the tools in a descriptive study is the correlational study. The purpose of a correlational study is to determine relationships between variables (Cherry, 2010). Correlational studies look for associations between exposures and outcomes in populations, as opposed to individuals (Grimes and Schulz, 2002). Correlational studies are the backbones for hypotheses, in other words, statements that can be supported or disproven with further research. There is, however, the danger that such studies can be misused to further certain points, which is dangerous to society in general. Furthermore, there is the danger that the design of such studies might be skewed in a certain way, to prove a certain point. There are three potential results of such a correlational study. A positive correlation is a situation in which variables increase or decrease, at the same time (Cherry, 2010). A correlation coefficient of around +1.00 means a strong positive correlation. ...
