A nine-year-old girl absolutely, totally failed a history test, a test covering material she knew well but either did not or could not convey that knowledge to her teacher by means of the test. The teacher knew also that her student knew the material and so gave her the opportunity to retake the test to have her final grade reflect the averages of the two tries. There were two days between "takes." The student studied well and diligently the first night, but the day before the second chance, she left her book at school. The day before the test, the girls mother noticed the history book on the kitchen table. There was a field trip that day; no class work was scheduled. Mother thought that probably the best thing to do would be to leave the book at home and avoid the possibility of neglecting to bring it back home that night. Ignoring what she reports as a very strong urge, she decided, "No, these girls have to learn to pick up their things and to take responsibility for themselves." She had her daughter return the book to her bookbag. The girl left it at school the night before the second chance. A 27-month-old girls uncle died the day after Christmas after having been ill since just after her birth. She had only physically seen him once, but she had talked to him on the phone and his picture was in the familys den. The toddler knew nothing of the mans death, but shortly after going to bed, she reappeared in the kitchen with the very matter-of-fact statement that Uncle Travis was in her room. First, ...
