such, though, this disease does not seem to receive the attention that other diseases, such as AIDS or Cancer, do, and yet, it affects so many. According to the National Institute of Health, emphysema ranks fifteenth in the United States amount others that contribute to crippling diseases(NHLIB 2003). Men seem to suffer from it more than women, though it would seem that women are closing the gaps. This is not a race for equality that most women would be proud to see, however. Emphysema, itself, is a disease of the elastic type fibers inside of the lungs, or of the chemicals present. These bands are what expand and contract to make the lungs pump and process air. Chemical reactions are the main stimulators for this fiber action and if the fibers are diseased, or if the chemical stimulators are not in the proper amounts, the lungs lose their ability to function properly. Smoking is responsible, says the NIH, for nearly eighty to ninety percent of the lung disease which is seen in the United States(NHLIB, 2003). However, certain people can be born without one of those chemical proteins which will also lead to emphysema. But, by and large, emphysema seems to be a behavioral related disease. The various stages of emphysema include the destruction of the air sacs inside of the lungs. This is particularly serious because these sacs are responsible for the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide. One can clearly see, then, that the destruction of these sacs prohibits the lungs from being able to metabolize oxygen as efficiently as before.
