Dr. Vygotsky lived during the late eighteen hundreds until his early death in 1934. He did more than propose new ideas for educators and expound upon ideas about the way in which a person learns. He was quite the well rounded scholar having many projects involved in various walks of life, including film, art, literature, science, politics, psychology(Zone, 2002). His works on learning, however, can be said to have had the most profound and lasting influence, even a century after his birth. Though the political climate in Russia sought to censure his ideas on education, his ideas were kept hidden and safely protected until they could be revived by some of his students. It can be said that Vygotskys work has been a major foundational cornerstone for developmental psychology and has influenced educational reforms beyond his home country of Russia. Vygotskys Zone of Proximal Development, is an idea that encourages the student to learn in cooperation with the teacher using socio-cultural contexts. Basically stated, a students zone is defined as that which the student is capable of achieving either on his own, with the aid of a teacher, or with the help of another more accomplished peer.(Zone, 2002). The students success is decided and based upon his or her ability to approach and solve a problem with little to no aid. At this point the scaffolding is not necessary. But what exactly is this scaffolding? Generally speaking, the teacher is the primary scaffold.
