Some tout that the state is simply there to enforce regulations when businesses have gotten too far out of hand, whereas others see governments as a controlling factor when it comes to economics. As can be expected, socialist to communism states tend to have more government control, where as the more "democratic" states tend to have less control - although it can be argued that there is no such thing these days as a true free market economy, as governments have some kind of hand in controlling it. But what is the role of the state when it comes to economic liberalism? Well examine what some authors of the day have to say about this particular question, then offer our own conclusions as well. Economic Liberalism: A Definition Before determining the role of government in economic liberalism, its first helpful to determine what, exactly economic liberalism is. In its most basic form, economic liberalism advocates a primarily laissez faire economic system. In other words, this economic liberalism (also known as neo-liberalism) claims that markets function best when theyre left alone by governments. Basically, businesses can control supply and demand without regulation or taxes that redistribute wealth - or other kinds of regulation. Furthermore, economic liberalism supports the idea of market forces to solve social problems, rather than state regulation.
