Introduction The use of the internet has been an enabling tool, ma y companies use a range of e-commerce application some designed specifically for this purpose, others have been developed for this. However, the level of e-commerce has been increasing which relied in the development and functionality of e-commerce applications. Looking at applications that may be used at a students place of work calls for speculation, however most companies will have call centres and many will want to develop long term relationships with their customers in order to maximise potential sales. One applications used in e-commerce is customer relationship management systems (CRM). The use is seen as valuable in an environment where a large number of companies on the internet and pursuing e-commerce as a strategy have increased the overall competitiveness of many businesses, especially retail businesses, due to the way the medium reduces the barriers to trade. Companies in different areas and even different countries can compete, often selling the same goods or services. One example is the rise of the use of e-commerce as a form of banking. In 1995 world wide only 1 financial institution had web banking, by 2002 this increased to 6,000 had this. In 1995 only 50 financial institutions had their own web sites, by 2002 this is 14,000 and in 1995 there were no credit card applications submitted over the web, but in 2002 1.5 million were submitted (Chaffey, 2004).
