1. Introduction From the first days of the internet there was a basic realisation of the enabling technology this could be. The potential in terms of e-commerce may not have been fully realised at the time, but today with mobile wireless technology and increasing cultural acceptance and expectation has also driven the development of the technology. The development of wireless networking and the integration with mobile or cellular telephones increased freedom with the development of third generation technology has also driven the use and expansion forward. The technology seen in many countries has been that of WAP. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) has been the dominant model of internet access for mobile telephone users. i-mode has been developed as an alterative to WAP and has a great deal of potential in terms of e-business. This paper will explore the use and potential of i-mode including the introduction into the Australian market. 2. Background i-mode (with a small i) was introduced into the market place in 1999, by 205 there are 13 companies using the technology and more than 175 million users, with 50 million users being active users (Odell, 2005). With this level of growth in such a short period of time the development and background to the rise of i-mode should be examined. i-mode is a development that took place as a result of the flaws seen in WAP so we need to briefly review this technology to appreciate the development of i-mode.
