Just as the organizational structure is outlined and discussed in the marketing plan for traditional business, so does the marketing plan for e-business require attention to items specific to the electronic environment. Prior to devising a marketing plan for e-business, it is necessary to identify and answer several questions. The purpose here is to review those questions. IT Capabilities What size is the business? Is it a multinational enterprise (MNE) built in the traditional pattern before the Internet existed? Is it a kitchen-table business consisting of a single employee and a single computer? Is it something in between? The size of the business will dictate the hardware needs and future use of the electronic environment. Obviously a large business can better justify the use of high-end servers and communications equipment, and it likely already has the infrastructure necessary for supporting e-business. A smaller business may not have these capabilities already and will need to add them. What Is the Vision? What does the organization intend for its business to accomplish by adding an online component (or even operating solely online)? Does it seek to automate as many processes as possible, or does it seek to avoid the anonymity of customers so common in the electronic environment? What Is the Total Cost? Obviously, this question can be answered only after defining what will be the focus of the e-business.
