On October 27, 1914, the senior English master of Swansea Grammar School in Swansea, Wales welcomed the birth of a son. Like his father, Dylan Marlais Thomas possessed a love of language and excelled in English and language, but in other academic areas he showed neither interest nor aptitude. Dylan was a sickly child and from a very early age showed a propensity to shy away from crowds, preferring to spend his time alone reading (Dylan Thomas Biography, 1998). The parents of Dylan Thomas hailed from Carmarthhenshire, a Welsh-speaking country, but they had opted to adapt to the culture of the English, therefore he was not educated in the written language of the Welsh. The distinct rhythms of his parents native language, however, intrigued the boy that was Dylan Thomas, and while he was still attending school he began to experiment with poetry using this dialectic rhythm (Dylan Thomas (1914-1953), 1999). Thomas especially favored the poetry of D.H. Lawrence during these years, and read every line of the poets work that he could find. He entered his teen years in a state of rebellion, and left school when he was sixteen years old. He found work as a journalist at the South Wales Evening Post, and four years later, in 1934, his first book, Eighteen Poems, was published (The Academy of American Poets, 1999). II.
