we can make conclusions regarding the velocity of our blood as it produces those sound waves. We accomplish this using high frequency sound made possible by Doppler technology. This works because different mediums transmit sound at different speeds (Milburn, 2005). Ultrasound, sound defined as anything above 20,000 Hz, is sound that is so high in frequency that it cannot be heard by the human ear (Eagle, 2006). Infrasound , in contrast, is 20Hz or less while audible sound is 20-20,000Hz (Milburn, 2005). Ultrasound is the sound that is taken advantage of by Doppler technology. When ultrasound encounters each of our organs it moves as slightly different speeds (Milburn, 2005). Ultrasound cant move through air, it has to have a media in order to travel (Milburn, 2005). Ultrasound is characterized by wavelength, amplitude, frequency, and period time (Milburn, 2005). Its wavelength is the length of one ultrasonic cycle (Milburn, 2005). Amplitude refers to the ultrasounds strength (Milburn, 2005). Frequency refers to the number of times it cycles per second and period time refers to the total time involved in a complete cycle (Milburn, 2005). In B-Mode the image that is obtained using a Doppler is rendered in shades of gray. The "B" of B-Mode, after all, is an abbreviation for "brightness" and the varying shades of gray are used to represent varying brightness. Color Doppler, in turn, is used in association with B-Mode to represent blood flow or other motion in body tissue. That motion is depicted using color that is superimposed on the background B-Mode image (Fenster and Downey, 2000, Fish, 1999). ...
