Some contend that much is lost in every translation of this great work, that no attempt to replace the Spanish with English, or indeed any other language, is good enough (Ormsby, 2003). Ormsby (2003) contends in the preface to his own translation of the book that this impossibility is not explained because: "Spanish idioms are so utterly unmanageable, or that the untranslatable words, numerous enough no doubt, are so superabundant, but rather that the sententious terseness to which the humour of the book owes its flavour is peculiar to Spanish, and can at best be only distantly imitated in any other tongue". Shelton was the first translator of the work. All critics do not agree, however, on the question of whether or not he translated both Part I and Part II of Don Quixote. The translation of the First Part is commonly attributed to Shelton. It was first published in 1612 (Ormsby, 2003). The translation of the Second Part, however, would not be published until 1620 (Ormsby, 2003). Ormsby (2003) points out that some critics doubt that this translation is actually that of Shelton. Ormsby (2003) himself concedes that the spirit which characterizes Part I is largely absent in Part II (Ormsby, 2003).
