UNITED STATES Domestic abuse has been a part of family life since the first clan was established centuries ago. It is only in relatively recent times that certain parts of the world are beginning to recognize the significant impact spousal abuse has upon the victim, as well as society as a whole. The United States serves as one of the leaders in this attempt to put an end to domestic violence, having instituted national laws against and protective programs for such abuse. Issues of manhood and masculinity are at the forefront of domestic violence in America. Men who feel a sense of importance and control over their wives tend to have a greater incidence of spousal abuse than do those who regard their mates in a more equal and respectful manner. What this indicates is a "correlation between the womans status in the family" (Anonymous, 1995, pp. 96-97) and the likelihood she will endure some level of domestic abuse. In association with this finding, it has come to light that a woman who has no decision-making status within her marriage or input as to how the finances are handled is "more likely" (Anonymous, 1995, pp. 96-97) to become a victim of spousal violence.
