He is the man known for having essentially created the periodic table and thus stands as one of the most prominent and powerful men in scientific history. The following paper provides a biography of Dmitri Mendeleev. Dmitri Mendeleev Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born in Siberia, February 7, 1834. "The blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy was the youngest of 14 children (or 11 or 17, depending on the authority) born to Maria Dmitrievna Korniliev and Ivan Pavlovitch Mendeleev. His father...was director of the local gymnasium" ("Ich bin Mendelejeff," 2004). His mothers side of the family had "settled in Tobolsk in the early 1700s and introduced paper- and glass-making to Siberia.(4) Unfortunately, Ivan died when Dmitri was quite young, leaving his wife to support the large family" ("Ich bin Mendelejeff," 2004). According to many historians, "Dmitri, being the youngest, appears to have been his mothers favorite child and was provided as many opportunities as she could afford. From his early years, she began to save money for Dmitri to attend the university" ("Ich bin Mendelejeff," 2004). He had others, those who worked in his mothers factory, who also lavished attention on him and it was here that he learned a great deal bout chemistry in relationship to making glass.
