But the truth is that the Catholic Church of Australia never acknowledged the Cruise marriage at all and for all intents and purposes, Nicole was single, not divorced, when she married Keith Urban more recentlyii. Many people, particularly those who are not religious, complain about the hypocrisy of the religious rhetoric concerning marriage and divorce. As far as religion is concerned, divorce is either wrong or it is allowed, but when combing through mainline Christianity, conservatism, and Biblical teachings, there are some common areas, but there is little agreement. For the most part, Roman Catholicism does not allow divorce with the exception of cases like Kidmans or in the event of the loophole known as annulment. However, Protestantism, a biblical religion, does allow divorce. In fact, this was an issue during the time of the Reformation. In America today, despite attention to religion, there are more and more divorces which are not seemingly tied to religion at all. In other words, people who are religious or not are just as likely to divorce. It seems that religion does not hold families together as some claim. Some experts believe that Protestant sects do little to hold families together, unlike Catholic churches which oppose divorce for almost any reason. In delving into this controversial topic, it seems that it is the case that divorce in religious families is not unusual and that church ministries are not doing their part in trying to hold families together.
