A lack of awareness of the impacts of personal prejudices and the need to better understand racial and social cultures can influence the actions of educators relative to predominant subcultures in the United States. Both African Americans and gay and lesbian populations experience prejudices in the educational setting, some of which are overt and others that are more insidious, though less distinct. Understanding the origins of prejudice and the importance of change is imperative to successfully maintaining diversity and inclusion in the classroom setting. Statement of Purpose The purpose of this study is to relate specific element s of education law to issues of prejudices against two substantial subcultures in the United States: African Americans and homosexuals (gays and lesbians). Because each of these individual subcultures comprises more than 10 percent of the American population and there is some overlap between the two, understanding the impact of individual prejudices and the root of inconsistencies in the application of educational experiences can promote a method for improving diversity and inclusion in educational programming and reduce negative educator interactions that can negate positive educational experiences for ethnic and social minorities. The purpose of this study is directly linked to the application of a legal premise of equal access to educational opportunities for all minorities. Under the doctrines created by Brown v.
