"Remember, it wasnt until 1972 that a woman reporter was allowed on the floor of the Democratic convention" (Rich, 1996). After returning to school in 1972, Johnson completed medical
school, but after a few years in practice, turned to psychiatry, where she has worked with womens on self-esteem and self-empowerment. Johnsons story is an example of how it
was in 1967. Although the broadcasting field has changed somewhat-the industry has set its own terms. In many ways, those terms have set the clock back to a
world of appearance and comportment. Women who do not meet these old-fashioned visual qualities, with few exceptions, are barred from TV. Many have turned to radio and the
newest media, but even here, the doors are often closed. As such, a number of organizations have formed around the world to further the advancement of women in broadcasting.
The main issue at hand is an attempt to bring women into management so that the stereotypes of women can be changed. Stein (1997) reports that eight San Francisco-based
journalism and communications organizations have formed the Media Diversity Circle in an effort to "raise awareness and understanding of diverse communities" (Stein, 1997). Helen Zia of the Asian American
Journalists Association said the issues will include all areas affecting these groups, including hiring and promotion, and inappropriate media images that foster stereotypes about all of the communities. Some
of the organizations sponsoring the Circle include Women in Communications and the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism. Stories of success and struggle abound. Lammers and McCarren (1996)
