the classical Greek pictorials are seen on the pottery that has survived. These are considered to be narratives of the beliefs of the people. Surprisingly, most of these pictures are without a sense of time or place, being set against solid, undifferentiated background with the characters unclothed so that time is only made available once the narrative is understood. This classification can also be seen in almost any segment from the Parthenon frieze (Small 569). The student will want to include any additional discussion of pottery that is applicable. Protagoras said that "man is the measure of all things" while the art of classical Greece interpreted that as being godlike in its adherence to the perfect form (Gardner 151). Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, is thought to be both male and female. The philosopher, Nietzsche, proposed that the reason for the worship of Dionysus was for the purpose of allowing the repressed feminine or nurturing side of man to come forth and for the brutal or aggressive side of women to be seen and confronted (Sena 189). Much of the art that has been found includes women as revelers and, or, followers for both Apollo and Dionysus.
