the problem. The following are three different designs and the way in which studies might be created based on this problem. Experimental Design An experimental design is one that is randomized, and that generally allows for the integration of a control mechanism in order to protect for issues of internal validity. When discussing the issue of randomization, it should be noted that this does not mean the random selection of the subject population (though this may be integrated into the study protocols), but instead the random assignment of subjects to the primary or control groups. Experimental designs are commonly utilized when there is a large enough subject population to create a randomized instrument. Trochim (2002) describes an experimental design as a "true experiment," in which a subject population is exposed to independent variables and outcomes are documented. The experimental design is the strongest of the three designs, but it is would be difficult to apply to the study of the attitudes of administrators and educators towards technology in international higher education. Though considered the strongest of the designs, the disadvantages of this design are that it requires the introduction of variables, is not utilized for a qualitative methodology, and can be difficult to coordinate relative to the goals of a study. This type of study is often used to show a causal relationship between the introduction of variables and the outcomes for participants. Quasi-Experimental Design The quasi-experimental design has many of the features of an experimental design, but does not require that the researcher go through a process of random assignment of the subject population. In addition, quasi-experimental designs often incorporate the use of a control group or multiple measures. ...
