Isaac Newton. These men became the intellectual fathers of the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century. One might even consider Descartes the father of modern philosophy. He wrote
a number of treatises concerning his beliefs. Descartes created a system of philosophy in which there was an absolute. He is famous for having said, "I think, therefore
I am." When Descartes said, "I think, therefore I am" he presented the ultimate argument. If a person does think, he/she must
be. The "I" in this instance is not only Descartes, himself, but all of humankind. Would it be any truer or any less true if the "I" were
an animal, a dog, or a cat, perhaps? Do animals have the capacity for thought? Animals may choose to do one thing or another. They come when
they are called by their master or their mistress. They sleep, and eat. It is suggested that the student writing on this topic consider whether thinking makes one
be, or whether being makes one think. Descartes was a very intelligent man. As such, he pondered lifes questions and problems.
He found that he could not believe in something unless its certainty was unquestionable. He only believed in the concrete, the positive, and the definite. In order to
determine whether something met his criterion, he would test it with a skeptical challenge. This skeptical challenge can be argued and Descartes can be proven wrong in what he
believed. Descartes used pure reason in his challenge. There are some instances when one simply cannot reason something into or out of existence.
