the nation being one of westward expansion, people see it largely as an expansion from within as it takes place on a single continent. They do not often think about
the fact that the expansion is really more about the will of the American people than anything else. To some extent, Frederick Jackson Turner makes this point in his works.
That is, going west is largely about the spirit of the American people. First, they came to the New World and then they were not satisfied with their small colonial
world so they forged through the rest of the land contained on the continent. The westward expansion that took place largely during the 1800s in North America is well
documented. Had the people at the time not moved to the West, it is likely that the United States today would look very different. Yet, while it seems rather positive
that there was westward expansion, there are negative aspects of the policies, such as the relocation of the Natives. This is something considered to this day as the nation embraces
affirmative action programs and tries to help Indian Nations as they exist alongside the U.S.A. In other words, while the expansion is welcomed by most, there are dilemmas that have
surfaced as a result of the trek across the land. Further, it should be said that without the advent of modern technology and the development of the railroad, the expansion
would probably not have been quite as successful. In the end, one can say that there are many myths about westward expansion, as the realities are quite dismal. Some of
it is glamorized perhaps to create a larger than life picture of the movers and shakers of Americas early period, but the truth is that life was hard. The settlers
