large organizations employ dedicated ethical advisors to help executives guide the company in an ethical fashion. However, placing an emphasis on business ethics can be somewhat misleading. Certainly, businesses are led by individuals, and any lapse of ethics in business practice must necessarily stem from a lapse of personal ethics on the part of some individual. Therefore, business ethics cannot be accurately studied without first establishing a foundation of personal philosophical ethics, which themselves relate to business ethics in that they often exert a profound influence over decision making. This paper will explore the influence of individual ethics on decision making in the health care industry, from a personal perspective. This paragraph helps the student give an overview of ACHEs ethical self-assessments. As a health care executive, it is vital to make managerial and procedural decisions that reflect well upon the organizations I represent; additionally, those decisions might sometimes have implications relating to the life and death of patients. As such, ethical behavior is necessarily a major consideration for myself and all responsible health care executives. One of the most common ways to audit ethical behavior in a health care executive role is to undergo an ethical self-assessment, such as those offered by the American College of Healthcare Executives. The healthcare assessment they offer allows the respondent to rate their ethical values across two professional dimensions: leadership and relationships. In terms of the leadership dimension, I felt that I scored rather well. Most of the questionnaire items are geared towards an ideal model wherein the executive acts as a role model of ethical behavior, and always takes care to place the organization and its goal before his or her self when making decisions (American College of Healthcare Executives, 2010).
