A 5 page research paper that contrasts and compares the use of deception in these two plays. There are intimations in Othello that part of Iagos hatred of Othello stems from resentment towards Desdemona and also from the fact that it is a mixed marriage. In Act II, Scene 1, lines 83-181. Shakespeare portrays an interlude in which Desdemona whiles away the time as she waits for Othellos arrival at Cyprus by questioning Iago in what critic Karl Zender describes as a "courtly word game" (323). He then posits that Desdemona unintentionally humiliated Iago in this past time, increasing his motivation toward revenge. Also, Shakespeare has Iago comment with scorn on the mating of a black man to a white woman. While Shakespeare has Othello remark on his own "blackness," it is also clear that Shakespeare is not writing the play from the perspective that it is about the problems of interracial marriage. In fact, Shakespeare is clear that the racial element is not something that Othello and Desdemona consider. This is shown by the fact that there are long intervals in the text in which the racial difference is not mentioned, so much so that its easy to forget this factor for those periods because of the plays universally human qualities.
