Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 3 page essay that discusses individualism in De Troyes' The Knight of the Lion and in the twelfth century in general. The process of cultural evolution that eventually resulted in a societal emphasis on the rights, concerns and needs of the individual did not occur spontaneously, but rather began to emerge during the Middle Ages. In the twelfth century, Western society evolved a "new level of self-awareness," which manifested itself as greater "concern for the inner life" than was expressed in previous medieval eras (Kramer 18). At this time, a new sense of individualism can be seen in the literature of the period, such as the romances of Chretien de Troyes and his tale of The Knight of the Lion. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

However, each era has produced its own perspective on how heroic narrative expresses the "values and mores of their society" (Shaw). For example, Chretien de Troyes in twelfth-century France found that "medieval chivalry provided the moral purpose as well as the narrative drive for mythological histories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table" (Shaw). In De Troyes The Knight of the Lion auto-representation in the tale reflects the eras new emphasis on the individual. For example, other than Sir Kays short opening boasts, the first prolonged first-person account is given by Calogrenant and tells of how he ventured into the "forest of Broceliane" (De Troyes). The knight then recounts his adventures and the intent of these adventures is clearly stated, as the knight inquires of a beast/man if he knows of "Some adventure whereby to test my prowess and my bravery" (De Troyes).
