his first wife, the beautiful, now dead Rebecca, the reader is pulled into a combination ghost story, murder mystery and romance. The main
conflict of "Rebecca" is that between Mrs. de Winter, a very shy and timid character, and the former Mrs. De Winter, the infamous Rebecca. Even though Rebecca is dead she
still holds power over Manderley and the people within its walls. DuMaurier captures the innocence and insecurity of youth in Maxims young wife. The book may have reached such
tremendous popularity because aspects of the young Mrs. de Winter are immediately recognizable for all women. The Very Young Mrs. De Winter When
the new Mrs. De Winter comes back from her honeymoon, the imposing Manderley is still ruled by Rebecca through her servants, her friends, and her furnishings. The new Mrs.
