The purpose of this paper is to tie in various methods of family therapy and child psychology in relation to Dibs story, and to determine what may have contributed to Dibs lack of self-esteem and his behavioral problems. This particular paper will cite some sources that are helpful to the explanation of Dibs problem and his treatment. First, an overview of the book itself would be helpful. Dibs in Search of Self is about a five-year-old boy who is raised in an upper-class family in New York City. Despite having the best money can buy, "Dibs," as this young boy is called, is mute, withdrawn and unmanageable, with his methods of communication varying between physical anger and weeping. Dibs situation is not helped by the fact that he was born to overachieving, success-prone parents; his father is a brilliant scientists, while his mother was a well-regarded heart surgeon before his birth. As a result, Dibs is an embarrassment to the family, which regularly withholds its love and regularly hides him from view; he is frequently locked in his room, which has no effect on his attitude, but only serves to make him more withdrawn and angry. When he does venture out to join a playgroup, he is unresponsive. He is only capable of communicating in monosyllables and in striking out physically when other children approach him. As a last-ditch effort, the playgroup leaders wonder if he needs to be sent to a school for the mentally retarded. Meanwhile, Virginia Axline, a pioneer of play therapy, offers to work with the child, and her combination of cognitive psychology, reflexive listening, guidance, play therapy and understanding helps bring Dibs out of his shell as a highly intelligent highly ...
