It is common knowledge that hypertension or "high blood pressure" is a major health problem in the United States and it is also generally well-understood that Americans eating habits are causing constant health and wellness problems that not only limits their health but also limits their actual life expectancy. What may not be so well-known is the fact that African-Americans face a much greater risk of hypertension and all of its related health problems that range from heart disease, kidney disease and failure, and stroke. "The DASH Diet for Hypertension" and the NHLBI In her review of the newly-published nutrition and diet book (which is based on the scientific study), "The DASH Diet for Hypertension: Lower Your Blood Pressure in 14 Days Without Drugs" Schneider (2001) makes the point that the DASH diet "significantly reduces blood pressure, cholesterol, and homocysteine levels through diet alone, and experts agree that widespread adoption of the DASH diet would result in a substantial decrease in coronary heart disease and stroke" (pp. 101). In fact researchers Obarzanek, Sacks, et al (2001) have documented that "total cholesterol levels were reduced in patients following the DASH diet by an average of 7.3 percent and LDL-C levels were lowered an average of 9 percent compared to those following a typical American diet" (pp. 80). The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute sponsored its own study of the diet in order to ascertain its effectiveness and found that there are numerous reasons to recommend it for anybody, regardless of their genetic predisposition toward heart or circulatory diseases.
